Representing your country in any sport, is something I could only dream of as a child. This dream became reality in 2012 when I was given the opportunity to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. Winning the World Indoor Trials race in the same year is still the pinnacle of my athletics career. That year was to be the best yet toughest of my athletics career. In July 2012 my partner Gemma was diagnosed with stage 3 Burkitt’s Lymphoma and athletics was put on hold. I am proud to say that Gemma made a full recovery and this experience gave us both a new perspective of running. With a new outlook I am determined to return to international competition within the next year and I have set my sights on setting new outdoor personal bests in 1500m and 5000m in 2017.

Highlights

  • Running the Great North Run in 2012 with my family . I completed it with cancer and in between cycles of chemotherapy finishing in 2hrs and 16mins. Whatever I go on to achieve this will forever be my greatest ever achievement.
  • Represented Charnwood at the European Club Cross country championships x 2
  • 5th at the British Indoor champs 1500m 2015
  • 6th at the British Indoor champs 3000m 2016.

  • Represented England and gained 1st place at the European Permit meet in Brataslava 2015
  • Represented England at the Aramgh International road race 2015 and 2016

I was a good national level runner during my youth finishing top 20 at English schools and racing well at University however it wasn't until I moved to my current coach Alex Hains in 2011 that my running really started to take off. With a new approach and belief in my ability we started to make great progress and I started to knock huge chunks off my times. However in 2012 my life took a different turn. In the march that year I managed to fall off a train and break my ankle in several places. A month later I was in the operating theatre having pins put in my ankle and starting the road to recovery with 10 weeks on crutches. I thought this was the hardest time in my life however little did I know a few months later on July 3rd I was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer at the ages of 23 and about to undergo 9 months of very intense chemotherapy and weeks spent in hospital. My whole life was turned upside down however running was my lifeline. A month after I finished treatment I struggled to run an 11 minute mile. Six months later I was back on the track racing and breaking my personal bests. My running really took off from there. Cancer changed mine and my husbands perspective on life completely and this has really helped my running. I'm so in love with the process and don't take anything for granted. I've gone on to achieve far more post cancer and gained England International vests. I hope to achieve much more! I owe so much to my wonderful coach Alex Hains for turning me into the runner I am today. I'm excited about the future and what it has in store.
